What it does

Brainforest is a learning game for kids in kindergarten through 4th grade. A child picks a theme, then answers math, reading, science and social studies questions to climb a treehouse, earning stickers along the way and a named treasure at the end of each quest.

Every question and every answer choice is spoken by a recorded narrator, so kids who can't read yet, or who read slowly, can still play on their own. The difficulty adjusts per skill as a child shows mastery, and questions they miss come back later for another try.

It runs entirely on the phone or tablet. No internet, no sign-up, no ads. Progress is saved on the device and nowhere else.

Who it's for

Kids in K-4, including pre-readers. The spoken narration means a five-year-old can play without a grown-up reading the screen for them.

Families who want screen time without ads or tracking. There's nothing to sign into and nothing to buy inside the game except the one unlock, which sits behind a grown-ups question.

Road trips, flights and places with bad signal. Everything is on the device, so it works the same with no connection.

Homes with more than one kid. Each child gets their own profile and grade, with separate progress, stickers and treasures.

Teachers and parents handing out a copy. Gift codes are short words you can say out loud or write on a slip of paper, and they redeem offline.

Features

A voice for every line

Questions, answer choices and feedback are pre-recorded clips bundled in the app. There's a button to hear the answer choices again and a voice on/off toggle. The narration was generated with the open Kokoro-82M speech model.

Real teaching pictures

Analog clocks for telling time, coins for money, fraction pies, shapes, and countable objects drawn right into the question.

Adapts per skill

The learning engine tracks mastery skill by skill and only moves up once a child has shown they've got it. Missed questions come back a few questions later. A run of wrong answers is treated as a signal to ease off.

What's covered

Math from counting through multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, time, money and geometry. Phonics, sight words, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and reading comprehension. Science, social studies and feelings.

Quests and rewards

Seven themes (unicorns, mermaids, dinosaurs, space, cats, horses, puppies), a sticker book that keeps everything, named treasures, daily streaks, and a break button when a kid needs one.

Parent dashboard

Skill mastery, accuracy and session history for each child, stored only on the device.

Easy on older phones

The app checks how fast the device is and trims blur, glow and decorative animation on slower hardware. It also respects the system reduce-motion setting. The lessons themselves don't change.

Open source

The full source for both apps is on GitHub under the MIT license, along with the engine tests (38 engine checks and 21 stress tests, all passing on the current code).

Privacy

Brainforest collects no data. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no third-party SDKs or ad networks. Your child's stickers, treasures, skill mastery and history are stored only on your device, and deleting the app deletes them. Nobody at Nice Dreamz ever sees it.

The App Store privacy label is "Data Not Collected." The policy is written for COPPA the simplest way: no personal information is collected from anyone, of any age.

FAQ

Does it really work with no internet?

Yes. The lessons, the narration and your child's progress are all on the device. The only time a store connection matters is when a parent buys the unlock, which goes through Apple or Google.

What does it cost?

It's free for 60 days. After that, a one-time $1.99 purchase unlocks it for good. No subscription. The purchase is behind a parental gate and there's a Restore Purchases button.

What ages and grades?

Kindergarten through 4th grade. You set a grade for each child when you add them. The App Store listing is in the Kids category, ages 6 to 8 band.

Can my child use it if they can't read yet?

Yes. Every question and answer choice is read aloud, and there's a button to hear the choices again.

Can more than one kid use it?

Yes. Add each child with their own grade. Progress, stickers and treasures are kept separate.

Which devices?

iPhone and iPad on iOS 17 or later, and Android 8.0 or later.

How was the content made?

Math questions are generated by code. Reading, science and social studies questions were written and then checked using Anthropic's Claude through the Claude Code command line tool. The narration was recorded with the Kokoro-82M text-to-speech model.
