What it is

What if a kid's tablet learned them, instead of the other way around?

JaneOS started as a side project to teach one specific four-year-old how to read. It listens. It rotates themes. It generates new activities every session, scaled to what she already knows. No ads, no engagement loops, no in-app purchases — just a quiet little tutor that adapts to one kid.

It runs on a local LLM via Claude, with Piper TTS for speech. No subscription, no parental data going to a cloud, no ad targeting your child's voice. Just code, models, and a kid getting better at reading.

Why it's different

What makes JaneOS special

🎙️

Voice-driven

Kids talk to it. It talks back. Reading, counting, naming things — all in conversation.

🌈

Theme-rotating

Animals one day, space the next, dinosaurs after that. Stays interesting.

🧠

Adaptive

Tracks what a kid already knows. Generates the next activity at the right level.

🔒

Private by default

No cloud, no telemetry. The kid's voice never leaves the device.

Who it's for

Is this for you?

  • Parents who want a learning app that isn't trying to monetize their kid
  • Educators curious about adaptive AI tutoring at the individual-child level
  • Tinkerers who want a starting point for their own kid-tutor projects
How to get it

Getting started in minutes

What it is

A friendly tutor named Bloom that teaches first-grade reading, phonics, math, writing, science, social studies, and feelings — through bite-sized 60–90 second activities your kid actually wants to do.

What makes it different

  • 🌱 Adapts — gets harder as your kid gets stronger, drops back gently if they're struggling
  • 🌟 Click-only safety — no microphone, no typing, no AI chat with strangers. Click the right answer, that's it.
  • 🎉 Real rewards — sparkly stickers, full-screen confetti for streaks
  • 🔇 Works with sound off — every answer shows a big visible green ✓ or red "Try again!"
  • 💸 Free forever — no subscription, no upsell, no in-app purchases

Scope

This is a personal project — a learning app I built for my daughter Jane and put online so other parents' kids can use it too. The hosted version above is the easiest way to try it. The repo is here mainly to show the project exists and to accept feedback.
